Garbage Disposals

Garbage Disposal Repair & Installation in Oklahoma City

A disposal that hums, leaks under the sink, or stops turning on does not automatically need replacement. We start with the symptom, check the disposal and its connections, and find out what failed.

Our Garbage Disposal Services

When we get under the sink, we check the disposal itself and how it connects to the rest of the plumbing. Our work includes:

  • Clearing jammed disposals
  • Diagnosing motors that hum or will not start
  • Repairing leaks at accessible connections
  • Replacing failed disposals
  • Connecting the dishwasher drain correctly
  • Installing disposals for new sinks and kitchen remodels

The garbage disposal repair cost comes down to what failed. Clearing a jam or repairing a connection is a different job from replacing a failed motor or leaking disposal.

Garbage Disposal Installation

For a new disposal, we look at the sink, existing plumbing, dishwasher connection, and how the unit will be used. Horsepower and feed type need to fit the kitchen rather than simply choosing the largest model.

Continuous-feed units run from a wall switch. Batch-feed models operate only when the stopper is in position. During a plumbing fixture installation, we mount the disposal to the sink flange, connect the drain, and open the dishwasher knockout when a dishwasher drains through the unit.

A new sink or remodel requires us to check the drain height and available space before installation.

When to Repair vs. Replace

A jam, loose drain connection, or other serviceable problem does not mean the whole disposal needs to come out. We repair the failed part when the unit is otherwise in workable condition.

A burned-out motor, cracked or leaking housing, or repeated failures on an aging disposal points toward replacement. Instead of using age alone, we look at what failed and the condition of the rest of the unit.

Disposal Humming but Not Working

If your garbage disposal is humming but not working, turn it off. Continued humming with the motor stuck overheats it and risks burning out the motor.

Never put your hand inside a disposal. Before checking it, shut off power at the breaker.

With the power off, check the reset button on the bottom of the unit. Some disposals have a hex-wrench slot underneath for turning the mechanism manually with the correct wrench. Follow the disposal manufacturer's instructions for your model. If it remains stuck or starts humming again, leave it off and have us check it.

Disposal Won't Turn On at All

When a disposal is completely silent, check the reset button and breaker first. With the disposal switched off, press the reset button. If the breaker has tripped and there is no burning smell or visible damage, reset it once.

If the breaker trips again, leave it off. A failed wall switch, wiring problem, or burned-out motor requires testing rather than repeated resets.

Disposal Leaking

Where the water appears tells us where to start.

A leak at the top points us toward the sink flange or mounting area. Water near the side connections puts the dishwasher hose and drain connection on the list. We repair those connection leaks when the surrounding parts are still sound.

Water coming through the disposal housing itself requires replacement. The housing is part of the unit and is not a connection we can just tighten or reseal.

Slow Drain or Backing Up

If the disposal runs normally but the sink still drains slowly or backs up, we look farther down the drain line. Food, grease, and other buildup restrict the pipe even when the disposal itself is working correctly.

We find where the blockage is before deciding what the drain needs. A damaged line requires drain repair, while a clog needs to be cleared. Our tips on how to prevent drain clogs cover what to keep out of the kitchen drain after it is flowing again.

How Living in OKC Affects Your Garbage Disposal

The disposal is only one part of the kitchen drain. In older Oklahoma City homes, we sometimes find aging drain piping or previous plumbing work under the sink that affects how a new disposal connects and drains.

That is why we look beyond the disposal when the same sink keeps backing up or leaking. Suntech works on kitchen plumbing throughout OKC and the greater Oklahoma City area.
